A fine early 19th century satinwood banjo barometer with a 12 inch round silvered dial indicating the states of the weather from 28 to 31 inches. The main dial is unusually engraved at the top with three Prince of Wales feathers and below there is a harp, a violin, a flute and a trumpet along with some sheet music. In the trunk there is a moulded inset thermometer with a Fahrenheit scale and at the top a subsidiary hygrometer dial. The maker’s signature is engraved on a round silvered brass plate above and below a spirit level indicator at the bottom. The elegant banjo shaped case is surmounted by a brass flowerbud finial and has a swanneck top. The satinwood veneers are richly patinated and there are seashells inlaid to each side of the thermometer.

Date: circa 1805 - 1822

Height: 44 ½ inches (113 cm) including finial
