Malcolm John Hitchcock was primarily a painter of landscapes, very often with a railway theme. He was born on 17 April 1929 in Salisbury and studied at the Andover School of Art. He exhibited mainly at the Royal Academy and the Royal West of England Academy, of which he was elected a Member. He also exhibited at the Paris Salon and in Brussels and Dusseldorf and with a number of commercial galleries in the UK. His work is represented in the collections of the Royal West of England Academy and Reading Museum and Art Gallery. He painted in oil, oil on tempera, gouache and watercolour and his oils were often completed using a small palette knife, which frequently gave them a "pointillist" appearance. He lived near Reading and died in 1998.

This painting is an oil on canvas over panel and is presented without a frame as was originally intended by the artist. The location is inscribed on the reverse with the Roman numeral V, indicating that it is perhaps one of several painted of this scene.
