The figure wearing a ” Tunica ” a male robe of the period.
Losses to the hand, one finger, the bridge of the nose and the robe.
The pedestal richly carved with Anthemion to the upper section, fluted central section, the base with stiff leaf decoration .
Inscription beside the figures left ankle “DILIGES DEUM TUUM”
“EX TOTO CORDE TUO ET PROXIMUM TUUM SICUT TE IPSUM”.
(Choose the Lord you’re God from the whole of your heart and keep him nearest to you as you keep yourself).
Makers mark to rear of inscription, C.P.MARCHESI.F 1846.
Provenance, formally property of Sir Henry Mather Jackson, white castle, later bequeathed to Haberdashers Girls school, monmouth S Wales.
