Marcus Holley Ford was primarily a painter of landscapes, coastal scenes and rivers, particularly the River Thames. He was born at Forest Gate, London in 1915. He mainly sold his work through commercial galleries in London and the Provinces, including the Frost & Reed Gallery in London's West End. He was a Member of the Wapping Group of Artists, which is a group of professional artists who share a common objective of painting the "Spirit of London and its River". This extends from the estuary, through London and up river to around Marlow.

This painting is an oil on canvas and is housed in a decoratively stained and limed frame with an inner slip. Overall, including frame, it measures 24(h) by 28(w) inches.
