Richard Spencer was a marine painter who worked mainly for private patrons. He painted ship portraits and naval battle scenes. His style was usually meticulous and quite formalized. Spencer often placed his signature on a spar floating in the water.
He did not exhibit in London as he worked chiefly on private commissions.
There are seven paintings by Spencer in the collection at the National Maritime Museum.
Also his work can be found in the Peabody Museum of Salem and the Mariners Museum Newport News.
His most celebrated works were a series of the Battle of Trafalgar which he painted in sets.
