Mary, the widow of Thomas Paston was the daughter of Sir George Browne and married as his second wife Sir Henry Compton of Bramletye Sussex. Sir Henry died in 1648, the year before this portrait was taken.
Snelling was a painter in London from 1647-1670, being well known to artists such as Cooper and the Beales. Sold with a copy of her will
