It is possible the sitter is William George Hay, 18th Earl of Erroll who was born on 21 February 1801. He was the son of William Hay, 17th Earl of Erroll and Alicia Eliot. He married Elizabeth Fitz-Clarence, daughter of King William IV and Dorothea Bland, on 4 December 1820 at London. He died on 19 April 1846 at age 45 from diabetes.
He succeeded to the title of 19th Lord Hay 1819. He succeeded to the title of 18th Earl of Errol 1819. He was invested as a Knight Grand Cross, Hanoverian Order in 1830. He was created 1st Baron Kilmarnock, of Kilmarnock, co. Ayr 1831. He was invested as a Knight, Order of the Thistle in 1834.
