These exceptional Japanese silver tea canisters were crafted during Japan's highly creative Meiji period. The impeccable pair feature an intricate design of irises in high relief wrapped continuously around the canisters' hammered exteriors. Stunning and sublime, this remarkable pair embodies the flawless beauty of Meiji silver.

Thanks to expositions such as the 1862 International Exhibition in London and the 1876 Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia, Japanese and other Asian arts and crafts were in great demand in Europe and the United States. Western art lovers were especially enthusiastic about the metal wares, the likes of which they had never seen before. The legacy of these Japanese decorative arts is seen most readily in the Art Nouveau style that it influenced in the West. Artists and artisans such as Alfonse Mucha, René Lalique, and Louis Comfort Tiffany all took inspiration from Japanese silver pieces such as the present pair in their Art Nouveau creations. Today, Meiji-period pieces of export silver remain highly prized.
