By Johann Joachim Kaendler
Height: 13,5 cm (5 1/3 inch)
A gentleman, wearing an elegant jacket in brown and gold, a purple waistcoat with gilt ornaments beneath, writing a letter: “Monsieur/ Les nouvelles assurances/ que vous m´avez donné/ de votre amitie”.
He is sitting at a gilt baroque table with a serpentine front and cabriole legs, a writing equipment and fashion accessories on the top: a silvered box, a seal, an inkpot, a sand scatter box, a watch, a scissors.
The base and the stool are decorated with green leaves and flowers in yellow, purple and blue.
To make this work, Kaendler was inspired by the etching "Le Chateau de Carte" by Pierre Filloeul after a painting of Jean Siméon Chardin (cf. Pietsch: "Meißner Porzellanplastik von Gottlieb Kirchner und Johann Joachim Kaendler". 2006).
The figure is mentioned in Kaendler’s Taxa (Rafael, no 31): "1 figure, depicting a gentlemen writing a love letter, sitting at a desk with a quill in his hand"
Comparative pieces: Collection Pauls-Eisenbeiss; Metropolitan Museum of Art (beforehand Irwin Untermyer Collection); The Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art, J. Pierpont Morgan Collection; Zwinger porcelain collection, Dresden; Residences in Munich and Ansbach.
