An Ancient Mexican Guerrero – Mezcala Large Carved Stone Mask of Abstract Form
Stone drilled holes either side to the top of the head
Circa 300 – 100BC

Size: 12.5cm high, 11.5cm wide, 6.5cm deep – 5 ins high, 4½ ins wide, 2½ ins wide
Provenance: Ex Private Belgian collection

An ancient Pre-Columbian carving which is stylistically typical of the art that came from the region either side of the Mezcala River in the Mexican state of Guerrero. In their extreme simplification, often verging on pure abstraction, every trace of sentimentality and humanity has been shunned. It is assumed that they were a highly warlike people because of the formalistic rigour and withdrawn taciturnity of their art.
