This charming bronze sculpture was designed by Eugene-Antoine Aizelin, and cast by the Barbedienne foundry.

Aizelin was an important sculptor, based in Paris in the late 19th Century. This piece is cast from a sculpture, titled ‘Mignon’ (French for ‘lover’), which was showed at several exhibitions in the late 19th Century, including the 1889 Paris Exposition Universelle, where it was awarded a gold medal.

This piece was rendered in bronze by the famous Barbedienne foundry in Paris. At the time this piece was created, in 1880, the foundry was managed by Ferdinand Barbedienne, the prolific metalworker.

‘Mignon’ depicts a girl seated on a wooden stall. She is dressed in a shirt and bodice, and a long skirt. The girl lifts up her left knee with her right hand, revealing a mandolin, which lies on the ground at her feet. She has long hair, partially covered with a scarf. The girl’s facial expression is thoughtful. The sculpture is covered with a light brown patina.

The seated figure is set on a shaped base, which is signed on its front, ‘Mignon’. ‘E. Aizelin’ and ‘F. Barbedienne, Foundeur Paris’ is marked onto the side.
