Label inside reads: John Ross Photographer and miniature Painter, 137 Princes Street, Edinburgh. Ross was married to the painter Elizabeth Campbell Thomson, a successful miniaturist painting in oil and water-colour on ivory, exhibiting at the Royal Scottish Academy on seventeen occasions and the Royal Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts on three.
Although it was John Ross’s name advertising the company, it was his wife who executed the miniatures and added colour tint to his photographs. The partnership was awarded a medal for portrait painting in the Edinburgh International Exhibition 1886.
