Very rare 17th. century Antwerp Tortoiseshell Mirror.
The frame is completely covered with tortoiseshell and ornamented in gilded bronze and silver. Sheets from the shell of the loggerhead turtle were used to surface furniture in Antwerp in particular. Although tortoiseshell is a hard, brittle material, it is easy to work. It can be sawn into translucent sheets, and also bent and compressed when warm. The yellowish, flamed sheets were underlaid with red paint to intensify their colours.
