The quality of micromosaics is judged on two factors: the concentration of the mosaic tiles, or 'tesserae' used to render the composition, and the painterly effect of the composition. This fine and important micromosaic panel is unusually large and uses many thousands of tiny tesserae to create a composition that exhibits the appearance of an Old Master painting, making it an exceptional example of technique.
The subject of the piece is St. Peter's Square in the Vatican City, Rome, where the monumentally vast dome of St. Peter's Basilica can be seen towering over the square below. In the huge square, which is actually an oval shape surrounded by curved rows of columns, groups of people in 19th Century dress can be seen walking and talking, taking in the magnificence of the heart of the Catholic Church under a blue sky.
The micromosaic is set into an ebonised wood frame with strong hanging supports to the reverse, and would make an exceptional addition to any well-appointed interior.
