Albert Saverys was born in Deinze in 1886. He was the son of a stage painter and took drawing lessons at a young age. Unfortunately his father died early (1902) and the young Saverys was forced to work in the family business leaving no much time for an artistic training.
From 1912 onwards he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent under the supervision of Georges Minne and Jean Delvin and started his career with works in the Impressionist and Luminist tradition using the technique of pointillism. He took part in exhibitions and quickly garnered fame.
The war interrupted his debut. After the war and under the influence of his friends and contemporaries Constant Permeke, Gust De Smet and Frits Van den Berghe, he discovered and worked a short time in the expressionist style of painting, but quickly developed his own style. The main river "De Leie" in Ghent became his most important source of inspiration.
In a short space of time, Saverys quickly found himself at the top of the Belgian art world participating at many exhibitions. He was also noticed internationally : between the two world wars, he was the guest of the Venice Biennale no less than six times. Saverys was also named professor to the National Higher Institute for the Fine Arts in Antwerp (NHISKA). He remained a professor in Antwerp until his retirement in 1951.
Saverys looked for new perspectives in the years before the Second World War. Travel brought him to Brittany and the mouth of the Loire. The second world war years were relatively carefree for Saverys. He died in Petegem in 1964.
Saverys was one of the most prominent Belgian painters of the interwar period and his canvases found international appeal. His work can be found in many important public institutions, galleries and collections around the world.
