Arthur Gilbert Frederick Williams was born in Stoke Newington, London on 19 December 1819 to the landscape artist Edward Williams (1781-1855) and Ann Hildebrandt. He came from the Williams family of painters which included his brothers Edward Charles Williams (1807-1881), Henry John Boddington (1811-1865), George Augustus Williams (1814-1901), Sidney Richard Percy (1821-1886) and Alfred Walter Williams (1824-1905). His great uncle was the animal painter James Ward (1769- 1859), his nephew was the landscape artist Charles Leslie (1839–1886) and his daughter Kate Elizabeth Ellen Gilbert-Williams or Kate Gilbert (1843-1916) also became an artist. He was taught to paint by his father and his older brothers and became known for moonlit scenes and stark mountain landscapes. Like his brothers Henry and Sidney, he avoided using his surname in order to distinguish himself from the other members of his family.

He married twice, losing his first wife in 1849, and had two children from each marriage Kate and Horace, both of whom displayed artistic talent. He lived in Weybridge and Hammersmith as well as in Barnes, however, in 1873 he moved to Surrey. He died on April 21, 1895 in Croydon.

His works can be found in many art galleries and museums including the University of Exeter, National Maritime Museum, National Trust, Glasgow Museum, National Library of Wales, Reading Museum and the Guernsey Museum & Art Gallery.

The paintings are housed in new English made gilt frame which are in excellent condition.
