This is a large fine mid-19th century Pre-Raphaelite oil on canvas depicting a ‘Mother and Child with Poppy’ by the eminent Victorian painter Frederick Richard Pickersgill RA (1820-1900). The painting is signed by the artist with his monogram and dated 1862. It is sold here in its superb original fine Victorian Louis XIV gilt frame.

As with all of the original antique oil paintings we sell it is offered in the very finest condition it can be for its age having just been professionally cleaned and re-varnished.

Frederick Richard Pickersgill studied under his uncle, the eminent Royal Academician William Frederick Witherington (1785-1865) before entered the Royal Academy Schools in 1840. A fellow student of Millais, Rosetti and Holman Hunt, Frederick Pickersgill’s technique and great attention to detail was heavily influenced by the Pre-Raphaelites. He found great success as a painter of finely executed historical and literary subjects, and exhibited 50 paintings at the Royal Academy between 1839 and 1875. Elected an associate of the Royal Academy in 1847, Frederick Richard Pickersgill became a full Royal Academician ten years later.

50 paintings at the Royal Academy between 1839 and 1875. Elected an associate of the Royal Academy in 1847 and became a full Royal Academician ten years later.

In 1847 Pickersgill's 'Burial of Harold' was chosen as one of decorations for the restored House of Parliament where it can still be seen today.
