Fitzgerald was an English painter of Irish decent.
He lived in Cheltenham and is likely to have had early artistic instruction with Stuart Hobkirk.
In 1896 Frederick is visiting St. Ives and is believed to have received instruction from Julius Olsson at his school.
Frederick seems to have concentrated on painting marine scenes in both oils and watercolour.
He settles in Boscombe Down, Hampshire but is known to have travelled widely.
He seems to have spent a great deal of time recording the fascinating coastline of Norway.
This view of the Volcano at Stromboli, Italy is one of his rarer Mediterranean scenes.
Despite his international travels he still returned to St. Ives on many occasions.
He was a regular contributor in the major exhibitions including the Royal Academy, RBA and ROI.

He died in Boscombe Down in 1938.

Works in Museums: Russell-Coates Bournemouth (2), Caldicot Castle.

Bibl: British Artists 1880 - 1940
