MOUNTANIOUS LANDSCAPE WITH A SAILING BOAT ON THE LAKE
Oil on canvas 12 x 16 inches
The youngest of the seven talented children of the Scottish artist Alexander Nasmyth, all of whom painted to a very high standard. This remarkable dynasty of artists all specialized in landscapes and painted views all over mainland Britain.
Charlotte lived in Manchester with her brother James and then moved to London to help her sister Barbara.
She was a regular exhibitor in the major London exhibitions from 1840 to 1862 including the Royal Academy, the British Institution, Birmingham Society of Artists & the Royal Manchester Institution.
A signed picture by Charlotte of Hampstead Heath, dated 1837, shows a style, which seems to have been closely influenced by Patrick’s but to be less detailed in observation from her brother’s. Her paintings had an atmospheric effect.
Works represented in: University of Dundee; National Gallery of Scotland; Hill Top, National Trust Cumbria; Lady Lever Art Gallery Merseyside.
