Westerbeek was a Dutch painter, born in Sassenheim in 1844. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague under the romantic genre painter B J Van Hove, but after completing his apprenticeship he became an admirer of the new Hague School painters, in particular the work of Anton Mauve. The influence of Mauve can clearly be seen in this work, which matches Mauve’s work in quality and skill. He exhibited works at The Hague between 1884 –1899 and stopped painting in 1901 due to ill health. Westerbeek’s entire career as an artist was devoted to the depiction of cattle and sheep in pastoral Dutch landscapes, a subject at which he excelled, particularly in his description of the light of Northern skys. It is perhaps this that makes his work so popular in the U.K.
