A silhouette profile left of a young midshipman in uniform. He is finely painted on card and highlighted with bronzing. The silhouette is signed and dated under the bust-line "Mrs Smythe 40 Strand del 1836"

The silhouette is in a papier mache frame with brass mount and hanger.

Mrs Edward Smythe worked from 40 Strand, London in a property previously occupied by Joshua Trewinnard until 1829 but from 1830 Mrs Smythe paid the rates and was recorded as the householder. Mrs Smythe's work is notable for her fine gold pencilling and for the long, smooth curve of the bust-line finish.
