LUDWIG KANDLER
Born, Deggendorf 1856, died Munich 1927

Thought to be
Cocham Castle on the River Mosel.

The son of a paper manufacturer in 1873 he graduated from the grammar school of the Benedictine monastery of Metten. Ludwig studied in the years from 1873 to 1875 at the School of Applied Arts in Munich and in 1878 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. In 1878 he presented his teaching certificate for teaching drawing and modelling to the Technical University of Munich. Between 1879 and 1900 he was, with frequent interruptions because of study tours, teaching at various schools in Munich. From 1900 he was freelancing and living on public and private contracts. Kandler was a creator of monumental murals cycles, which, however, have mostly through demolition or destruction of the buildings are not preserved (eg in the town hall in Essen) and paintings for the design of churches in Odelzhausen, in his hometown (Geiersberg Church) and Sibiu. The resulting portraits and genre paintings are painted in different painting techniques and styles. He is a typical representative of the Munich school of artists. A large body of his work was destroyed during the 2nd World War.
