Outstanding, early 19th Century 'flame' mahogany ‘flat to-the-wall’ bow-front Stick Barometer in original condition; the ogee moulded pediment over finely engraved silvered brass register plates, signed by the maker, and bearing the classic Ramsden ‘wrap-around’ vernier, operated by ivory set-knob via rare solid state rack-and-pinion mechanism. The attractively patinated 'flame' mahogany trunk, ebony banded and concealing offset cistern tube, which terminates within ebonised urn shaped cistern cover.

Nathaniel Worthington was a former apprentice of the world renowned Jesse Ramsden instrument-maker. He acquired the still thriving firm from Matthew Berge in 1819, and in 1822 entered into partnership with James Allen, which continued until 1835; thereafter it reverted to Worthington’s sole control until 1851.
