Fine quality and unusually large 19th Century carved mahogany-cased aneroid barometer. The open-fretwork case carved with stylised leaf and ribbon designs. The barometer with 10 inch [26 cm] dial of finely engraved, silvered brass, with red letter highlights and engine-turned central motif, signed by the retailers, Gray and Selby of Nottingham, and protected by 10mm bevelled plate-glass, housed in cast brass bezel, secured at the back via threaded rods.
Height: 24 in. [61 cm.] Width: 19 in. [48 cm.]

Negretti & Zambra were the World’s leading meteorological instrument makers of the latter 19th Century and early 20th. Their folio serial number is inscribed on the inside of the case. Gray & Selby were prominent Nottingham Opticians with various premises in the City, notably at 23 Albert St.
