Good quality and rare 19th Century oak cased RNLI Sea Coast Barometer - No. 12 – one of the earliest examples of this type of barometer. The arched top with porcelain plate bearing RNLI inscription. The main canted register plates, signed by the makers, inscribed with serial number 162, and bearing mercury Fahrenheit thermometer with concealed bulb, and rack-and-pinion operated vernier. Inset Board of Trade certification plate, dated November 1860. Plates protected by bevelled glass. The original concealed wide-bore barometer tube terminating in rectilinear cistern cover.

Negretti & Zambra were the foremost Scientific Instrument makers of the latter 19th and early 20th Centuries, producing a large volume of precision instruments. This type of barometer was produced at public expense primarily for fishing ports and Life-boat Stations from c1860, and hence was assembled entirely using brass screws and without glue.
No 12 was located at Irvine Lifeboat Station in Ayrshire from 1861 until its closure in 1914.
