Good quality and unusual 19th Century oak cased ‘Admiral Fitzroy’s Storm Barometer’ - No. 1628 - in original condition. The porcelain barometer plates, unusually with red highlights, bearing twin rack-and-pinion operated verniers and signed by the makers. Inset mercury Fahrenheit thermometer, also signed. The plates are protected by bevelled plate glass. The original concealed wide-bore barometer tube terminating behind rectilinear cistern cover.

Negretti & Zambra were the foremost Meteorological Instrument makers of the latter 19th and early 20th Centuries, producing a large volume of precision instruments. This type of barometer was produced, at Fitzroy’s behest and public expense, primarily for Life-boat Stations, and hence was assembled using screws rather than glue.
