Good quality and unusual 19th Century oak cased ‘Admiral Fitzroy’s Storm Barometer’ - No. 711 - in essentially original condition. The porcelain barometer plates bearing rack-and-pinion operated vernier and signed by the makers. The most unusual detachable inset mercury Maximum/Minimum Fahrenheit thermometer also signed. The plates are protected by bevelled plate glass. The original concealed wide-bore barometer tube terminates in rectilinear cistern cover.

Negretti & Zambra were the foremost Scientific Instrument makers of the latter 19th and early 20th Centuries, producing a large volume of precision instruments. This type of barometer was manufactured initially at public expense primarily for Life-boat Stations and hence was assembled without the use of glue and using only brass screws. They were also exported in significant numbers.
