Good quality and very unusual 19th Century brass-cased “Gun-Marine” Stick Barometer; the cylindrical trunk with engraved silvered brass register plates, scaled in inches and signed by the makers with “late Newman and Son”. Rack-and-pinion operated vernier and bevelled glass cover. The lower section, mounted with engraved ivory Fahrenheit thermometer, the barometer tube, with vulcanised India rubber sleeve, and terminating within 2-part Newman-design iron cistern. The barometer is supported on replaced brass gimbals.

The foremost British Scientific instrument-makers of the latter 19th and first half of the 20th Century. They acquired the prestigious business of John Frederick Newman in 1862. The Fitzroy-designed Gun Marine was developed by Negretti and Zambra around 1860 and was extensively used on warships for the next three decades.
