A very fine late 18th century Irish neo-classical chimneypiece of elegant proportions in Statuary marble with tapering pilasters inlaid with blind flutes of Convent Siena marble which terminate beneath corner blocks carved with fruit filled classical urns.

The central frieze tablet finely carved with winged griffins and arabesques above a curtain of delicate lamb’s tongue and flanked by fluted frieze panels inlaid with richly coloured Sicilian Jasper marble beneath a corniced mantel shelf incorporating a tier of egg and dart carving.

The chimneypiece was removed from Glyde Court, near Tallanstown in County Louth, Southern Ireland. Glyde Court, which now lies in a state of terminal disrepair was built in the late 18th century and was the home of the Foster Baronets, whose extended family included Lady Elizabeth Hervey, notorious for her relationship with Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire.
