Footnote: Nicholas Matthew Condy (1793-1857) was born in Plymouth and followed in his father’s profession as a painter. Although primarily known for his views of Plymouth Harbour he was also commissioned to paint a series on the Thames. This schooner lying off the Tail of the Bank, Firth of Clyde, carried sugar from the West Indies for the Glasgow family of Heape. The painting was acquired by Charles Livingston of Liverpool on his marriage to Miss Heape and thence by descent through to the Dickinson family of Cumbria.
