Nikolai Konstantinovich Leventsev. Born 1930. Oil on canvas initialled "Ballerinas Rehearsing", Signed and inscribed verso. Nicolay Leventsev is one of the last Russian post-impressionist of the early 1950s. He was born in 1930 in Eastern Russia, and graduated from Palekh Art School, and later moved to Moscow, where he further graduated from the Surikov Fine Institute in Moscow. As an artist Nicolay was highly appreciated in the Soviet Union, and was ranked as the Peoples Artist, and exhibited both at home and abroad. His portraits were commissioned by political and industrial elite of the Soviet Empire. Work became highly collected, with prominent sales in Paris 1990-94 and in London 1995-98. His work has become rare now, as he was silent for almost a decade ,taking up a brush occasionally for friends and relatives. Nikolia died in 2008.
