Alfred Godchaux
1835-1895 French
Godchaux painted port scenes, along the Normandy coastline, beaches with fishermen and boats, His mountainous landscapes are of the Pyrenees and the Savoie Mountains. Alfred liked big skies and panoramic views in his paintings that are traditional in style. Alfred signed his paintings in a very small and finely handled style sometimes etched into the drying paint so finely, a magnifying glass is often required to see them. Emil Godchaux (1860 -1938) is thought to be his son as he worked in a similar style to his father painting similar sized subjects and places in a less defined style. Emil signed in a larger easy to read style.
