Graphically Depicted on Rails, under Steam, with a Coal Filled Tender, Driver and Fireman
Rare British 19th Century Naive School, Oils on Early Wooden Panel
The Locomotive Inscribed 'North British 35' and Hawthorn and Co'
An engaging primitive image of a steam locomotive depicted standing on rails with a fireman and driver in attendance. It is delightfully well detailed and retains excellent colours. Painted in oils on a wooden panel, now slightly bowed with age in a charmingly naïve fashion. The painting has been cleaned of old surface dirt and varnish to reveal a fresh image with an understanding of form and graphics, from the golden age of steam locomotion. A most unusual subject, lovingly executed, possibly by a railwayman or engineer.
