Carlo Antonio Tavella was known as ‘Il Solfarola’. He was an Italian painter of the Baroque period active mainly in Genoa. He was born in Milan the son of a Genoese merchant and was initially a pupil of the painter Guiseppe Merati. In 1695 he was working in the studio of the Dutch painter Pieter Molyn called ‘Il Tempesta’. Museums in Bordeaux, Geneva, Savona and Edinburgh hold examples of his work.
