Carved in the form of a double barrelled flintlock pistol. With a hinged compartment on the underside, where the snuff can be stored.
Bibliography: Edward H. Pinto, in his book ‘Treen and Other Wooden Bygones’ (Bell & Hyman Limited, London, 1979), includes an image of a later ‘novel walnut snuff box shaped as a twin-barrelled pistol’. He notes that the design for this snuff box is: ‘based on an early 19th-century joke about a nosologist who is alleged to have invented such a weapon so that he could prime both nostrils simultaneously.’ (ibid, p.350; plate 364-E).
