The oak-cased jug of tapered form coopered with silver plated bands, handle, top and spout. The design suggests it was intended for colonial or campaign use, to be both robust and to keep the contents cool. The mark to the jug, ‘semper paratus’ (always ready) is believed to be a Doulton mark. The plate maker is John Grinsell & Sons of Birmingham, founded 1879.
