A substantial and well detailed Oak longcase clock by James Alford of Wells, the well proportioned oak case complete with caddy top is embellished with Rosewood, Palm and Sycamore inlays, the "Star Burst" inlays to the bottom panel and trunk door are in Ebony and Sycamore. The 8 day duration movement with brass dial and silver chapter ring has an unusual centre sweep date hand. James Alford is listed as working in Crowcombe in 1747, it is likely he travelled to Wells to conduct his business or possibly in the records and passing of time, Croscombe (near Wells) was misspelt as Crowcombe! the top section of caddy a later replacement,The case and movement fully restored and the movement carries a 12 month guarantee from the date of purchase.
