Official George II Coronation medal.
Obverse: Bust of George II looking left, laureate, hair long, in armour and mantle fastened with a brooch on the shoulder. Legend: GEORGIVS. II . D. G. MAG . BR . FR . ET . HIB . REX .
Reverse: The King, seated on King Edward's chair, holds the sceptre and orb and is crowned by Britannia who is holding a cornucopia and is leaning on the fasces.
Legend: VOLONTES . PER . POPULOS. (By a willing people). Exergue: CORON . XI . OCTOB . MDCCXXVII.

This is the official medal which was distributed during the Coronation ceremony. It is believed that 200 of these medals were struck in gold, 800 were struck in silver and a still greater number in copper.

John Croker (21 Oct. 1670 - 21 March, 1741) was born in Dresden and named Johann Croker. He was brought up as a jeweller but practised die-engraving from an early age. He came to England in 1691 and was appointed Assistant Engraver to the Royal Mint in 1697. Croker was appointed Chief Engraver in 1705, on the death of Harris.
