We are delighted to offer for sale this superb landscape by the Northumberland artist Thomas Henry Gibb, who has signed the painting in the lower left hand corner and also signed and entitled it verso 'A Sunny Afternoon on the Tweed, T. H. Gibb 92'.

The painting depicts a rural scene on the banks of the River Tweed, where the river is meandering through a cultivated plain, with rolling hills in the background and a horse-drawn haycart being loaded by a young woman with a pitchfork.

The River Tweed is a river in the Scottish Borders and exits into the North Sea at Berwick on Tweed.
The canvas is clean and taut and is unlined with no repairs or paint loss.

There is a little very fine craquelure consistent with age. The frame is new.
He exhibited in the 1880s at the Arthur Tooth Gallery, the Royal Scottish Academy and the Royal Hibernian Academy.

He specialised in paintings of Highland lochs and lakeland scenes, often with cattle and animal paintings, often of dogs.

There are 9 of his paintings in the National Collection which can be viewed at BBC - Your Paintings or at Museums & Art Galleries in the North East.

Auctions results for his work may be found at artprice.com (41 listings), artnet.com (20), arcadja.com (20) and findartinfo.com (22). A much smaller example of his work achieved £1400 at Brightwells in 2012.
