Samuel Edmund Waller was a genre and landscape painter born in Gloucester on 18 June 1850. He was son of an Architect and was educated at Cheltenham College before attending the Gloucester School of Art.
At the age of 18 he entered the Royal Academy and began exhibiting from 1871. In 1872 he visited Iceland and published an illustrated account of his travels. Waller’s took great pains in studying animals, particularly horses and his knowledge and skill in representing them made him highly popular with the sporting set. He exhibited works at the Burlington House gallery, Royal Academy and the Royal Institute of Oil Painters. He died on 14 June 1903 at his studio in Haverstock Hill, London.
Examples of his work can be found in the Harris Museum, Sheffield Museum and the Tate.
The painting is housed in new, English made gilt frame which is in excellent condition.
