Humphry did not wish to assist his mother in the family lace making business and having showed an aptitude for drawing he was sent to London in 1757 to study art. He was apprenticed to Samuel Collins, whose practice he succeeded to when Collins went to Dublin. He was employed by the King. In 1773 he travelled with George Romney to Rome, Florence, Venice and Naples returning to London in 1777. It was during these years of travel that this portrait was taken. In 1785 Humphry went to India where he painted portraits of Europeans and natives. He is considered to be one of the best miniaturists of the 18th century.
