Edna Clarke Hall became a pupil at the Slade School of Fine Art aged 15.She won a Slade Scholarship in 1897and fellow pupils included Augustus and Gwen John.

Paddling probably depicts Edna, her husband and one of her two sons. The painting is presented mounted but unframed.
