A beautifully carved pair of George I period Palladian giltwood wall brackets; the carved shelf supported by a female mask on a diaper patterned back board.

The design of these wall brackets owe their inspiration to the designs of William Kent who was the most influential architect of the early Georgian period. His designs for Chiswick House and Holkham Hall in the Palladian taste establishe it as the most fashionable style of architecture in the Eighteenth Century.

The carved female mask of these wall brackets bears strong similarities to the female masks carved on the entablature of the marble hall at Raynham Hall, Norfolk. William Kent was employed by 2nd Viscount Townsend at Raynham between 1725 and 1732 and is thought to be responsible for much of the carved ornamentation including the design of the marble hall.
