A pair late 19th century portrait marble busts
Kitson was a fine arts sculptor active in the United States from about 1876-1906. He had studios in New York & Boston. He was born in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, studying in Rome 1870-73 when he received two gold awards. He established a studio in Italy and relocated to New York in 1878 to work alongside his brother's firm of sculptors, Ellin & Kitson Artitectural Sculptors, who carried out work for churches, commercial buildings and fine residences.
Samuel Kitson received many private commissions including statuary for Vanderbilt House, Longfellow House and the Sacred Heart Blesses Sacrement Catholic Church, New York. He also completed many portrait statues of catholic bishops.
