Of baluster outline with a tall flared neck, raised on a stepped circular foot, minor dent. These vases are of a form known as Gu, meaning ancient. Paktong wares were produced in China both for the home market and for export.
William Fehr, 'Treasures at the Castle of Good Hope' (Cape Town: Council of Trustees, William Fehr Collection, 1963.) A similar example is illustrated on page 96.

A pair of Chinese ‘Gu’ vases very similar to our pair and dated circa 1740-60, are shown in Keith Pinn’s book 'Paktong: The Chinese Alloy in Europe, 1680-1820' (Antique Collectors’ Club, 1999), p.44. Gu vases are not always easy to date but it can be assumed that this pair were made at approximately the same time as the coat of arms was engraved. This engraved English armorial can probably be dated to 1772.
