A rare and highly decorative pair of armchairs with inward scrolling supports, the cane seats above octagonal turned tapering legs, decorated throughout with flowers, paterae and trailing foliage, the top rails with fantastical vignettes depicting turreted buildings, figures and trees, rising from double-headed swordfish, probably Bareilly, Eastern India.
See A. Jaffer, Furniture from British India and Ceylon, p. 231 for a caned open armchair of similar form from Calcutta, which was probably given to the East India Marine Society in 1835.
