A pair of elegant and visually intriguing red lacquered tables or stands, the octagonal tops formed of two interlocking squares and reflected in the conforming bases. The tops are supported by an elegant waist emphasised by the curved tapering at the top of the slender legs which have their angularity tempered by a vertical moulding and by horse hoof feet linking them to the bases.
The symbolism of the octagon is that the number eight in Chinese is fortuitous. Each side has a carved decorative motif which is cleverly folded around the corners of the four shorter sides giving continuity of the line across the right angles.
