Very fine quality pair of oak and burr walnut Italian armoires, each with three doors which open on strong original pintel hinges. The armoires each have three original and adjustable shelves but are suitable also for rails and the shelves can be placed lower leaving ample hanging height.

Each with two secret large storage compartments hidden in the plinth.

The substantial oak frames beautifully carved with winged griffons, armorials, trailing vines and renaissance style figures and masks - each individual and unique - and carved from the solid.

The doors are inset with beautiful burr walnut panels - the craftsman has chosen the veneers very skilfully and each is superbly bookmatched to create the same radiating pattern in each of the six panels - and each is framed in a raised carved and intricate border. The inner faces of the doors are lined in figured walnut inlaid with satinwood stringing.

Very substantial and robust, with all original timbers including solid oak panelled back panels, these wardrobes are works of art and date from c. 1900

The wardrobes dismantle into small sections and so are cost effective to transport and can be considered even for rooms which have narrow access stairs or doorways.

The wardrobes both have keys but these are worn and do not consistently turn the locks. We are investigating and will update the description when we have these working fully. The keys are not necessary as all the doors close smoothly and properly with no judders or warps and they stay shut once closed.

The whole set on huge lion paw feet to each corner below a heavily gadroon carved frieze.

It is extremely rare to find such a beautiful pair of matching wardrobes, both in excellent original condition and of a rich warm and consistent colour, with no woodworm, damage or repairs.

From a private house in London.

Dimensions are:

Each wardrobe is 75 inches wide, 79.5 inches high and 20 inches deep.

The depth of the inside of the cupboards are 17 inches.
