Loring’s globes described as firstly, ‘Loring, Terrestrial Globe, containing all the late
discoveries and geographical improvements, also the tracks of the most celebrated
circumnavigators, compiled from Smith’s new English globe, with additions and
improvements by Annin & Smith, Boston, Josiah Loring, 136 Washington st. 1841'. And
as being ‘ made up of twelve hand-coloured engraved gores and two polar calottes laid on
a plaster sphere, the equatorial graduated in degrees and labelled every 10°, and in hours
I-XXIV labelled every fifteen minutes, Greenwich meridian ungraduated, equinoctial
colure graduated and labelled every 10°, the ecliptic graduated in days and labelled for the
months and every five days, the Pacific ocean with an analemma, with brass hour dial and
meridian ring graduated in four quadrants, the ebonised horizon applied with handcoloured
engraved ring graduated with amplitude and azimuth, and thirty two compass
points, houses of the zodiac, days of the week and months’.
Secondly the celestial globe being described as ‘containing all the known stars, Nebulas &
C, Compiled from the works of Wollaston, Flamsted, de la Caille, Havelius, Mayer,
Bradley, Herschel, Makelyne, the Transactions of the Astronomical Society of London
C&C, From Smith’s New English Globe, Boston, Josiah Loring, 136 Washington St,
1833’; both globes being made up of twelve hand-coloured gores to the celestial poles on a
plaster sphere, the equatorial as the terrestrial, ecliptic labelled as the terrestrial and with
zodiacal sigils, the constellations depicted by mythical beasts and instruments and labelled
in Latin, hour ring, meridian and horizon as the terrestrial.
