A good pair of George III Hepplewhite mahogany hall chairs

English, circa 1790.

The pierced shield-backs, above the solid serpentine seats, raised on square cut tapering front legs and splayed back supports, united by H-stretcher.

Fantastic original condition, beautifully patinated.

Hall chairs were designed, in the words of Sheraton in the Cabinet Dictionary, 1803, to be 'placed in halls, for the use of servants or strangers waiting on business'.
